Death of Augustus Beadle-
(From Howard County Times)
March 1st, 1898, at his home in Cresco the spirit of Augustus Beadle passed to the immortal realms beyond this life. For five weeks he had been losing appetite and strength, moving about his home more feebly day by day, suffering little pain but suffering much from lassitude. The tenderest care and solicitude of his family and his own brave uncomplaining spirit could not thwart the deadly malady and he faded almost imperceptibly until the pearly gates swung open to receive his angel form. Vivid as the sunlight his marvelous intellect remained until the mortal breath ceased, concerned for all his loved ones after weakness had stilled his voice.
Mr. Beadle was born October 20, 1820, at Poughkepsie, N. Y. June lst, 1847, he was married to Miss Eliza Parker, at Hyde Park, N. Y. In 1855 they removed to Howard Co., Ia., and have since been identified with all commendable enterprises in the county. Six children were theirs, two dying in early childhood, two in youth. A son, John H., and a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Blackman, survive him.
When a man lives the life that he has has{sic} lived, death has no terrors for him, and life, though flecked with many sorrows and disappointments, has been blessed; for as he has said, "The happiest thing that we can do for ourselves in this life, is to iron out the wrinkles in the lives of others,” and that is what he has done with the skill and tact that only a refined, cultured soul, filled with the sweetest, tenderest love and sympathy could dictate. The humblest shred his solicitude as sincerely as the highest.
For twelve years he held the position of Post Master in Cresco. He platted and added to the city much of its finest territory—he was the father of the town and gave its significant appellation, “I grow.” He was a large land owner, but he loved money only for the good use that could be made of it.
No character will ever more indelibly impress itself upon the people of this locality with fragrant memories of kind, noble, unselfish deeds. Every heart mourns in a measure that words can not express that his genial presence is forever removed from our midst.
His only daughter, whose heart is doubly tried, having recently been bereft of her only child, reached him a few hours before his death.
To his beloved wife with whom he had journeyed almost half a century, the sympathy of all tenderly turns.
The last rites will be observed at his home Thursday at 2 o’clock.
