Mrs. Sarah Hope died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Sturgis, on Friday night, Feb. 26th, and was buried at New Oregon cemetery on Sunday, the 28th.
Sarah Jane Kerr was born at Albany, N. Y., about 1802—the exact date is not known. She was married to John Hope when 16 years of age. Her husband was a soldier in the war of 1812-15, and entering the Union army in the early sixties, was killed in the battle of Gettysburg. There were born to them three sous and five daughters, of whom only one son and two daughters survive, most dying young. They removed to Iowa in 1869. Mrs. Hope had united with the Baptist church in the state of New York and came to the Cresco church on a letter from there. She was punctual in her religious duties, always present at the church services as long as she was able to attend. Owing to deafness she had been deprived of hearing the word preached for many years, and so quiet and secluded had been her life that her old friends of years ago had ceased to know that she was living. She had longed for her release for many months, but was patient amid her suffering to a marked degree.
Services were held at the house on Sunday at 2 p. m., conducted by the pastor of the Baptist church.
“Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them.”—Rev. 14:13.
