Edgar Preston Beach was born in New Oregon township, Howard county, Iowa, August 20th, 1870.
In addition to a good district school education, he attended the schools at Decorah and Fayette. He developed a fine musical talent, and while in business in New Hampton, he became a member of the cornet band of that place. After his return to his old home in Howard county, he was always in demand at church and social entertainments, and his cornet would often assist his sister at the organ in the Paris M. E. church.
Edgar was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Beach, who were among the first settlers in Howard county. He was the pet of the family, as father, mother, sisters and brothers thought “Ed” was about right in all things, and was loved and respected by all who knew him.
In October last he contracted a severe cold or la grippe from which he never fully recovered. Monday evening, Jan. 6th, after returning from church, he was prostrated with broncho-pneumonia, and when the physician arrived, he pronounced the case was almost hopeless. His mother, sister Edith, and brother Eugene, were with him all through the night and tried to beat back the shadows that were creeping over the loved one, but at about 6 o’clock they saw the end was rapidly approaching, and hastily called the aged father, who had just time to reach the bed-side of his darling boy to see the light and life go out at 6:30 o’clock Wednesday morning, Jan. 8th. Word was sent at once to friends and loved ones, and soon all was being done for the stricken family and for the dead, that loving and sympathising hands and hearts could do.
The shock fell with crushing weight upon the family, and the entire community was moved by it. One brother living but few miles away and another one at Elma, knew nothing of his recent illness. Another brother who resides at Wagner, Neb., was notified of the sudden death of his brother, but circumstances over which he had no control, prevented him from attending the funeral. The church was too small to accommodate the friends who gathered there to show their respect for the dead, and their sympathy for the bereaved family.
Thus death has again claimed one of the choicest family treasures as its own; a family circle has been sadly broken; a loved form taken from the home and community; a sweet voice is mute, and sadness rests like a pall upon the home and neighborhood
This was the second time death claimed one of the treasures of Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Beach. Edgar was the next youngest child in the family circle of eight, six of whom remain to console and comfort the aged parents as best they can. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their great loss; for while the family have lost one of their dearest treasures, society has lost one of its brightest young men, one who was esteemed by all who knew him, for his sterling honesty and morality, as well as for his fine social qualities that made him a welcome guest in every home, and endeared him to old and young alike.

The voice we loved is still in death,
His form lies ‘neath the sod;
It waits the resurrection morn,
His spirit rest with God.

And when fond memory in time
Turns back the leaf of years,
The echoes of the long ago
Will melt our eyes in tears.

In vain our eyes look up to see,
How sweet is Edgar’s rest;
Then, let us wait, and hope, and trust,
Till we are with the blest.

Card of Thanks
We desire to extend our most earnest heart-felt thanks to all those who have been so tender in their ministry of love and helpfulness in the sudden and crushing affliction that came to us in the unexpected death of our precious son and brother, Edgar. Nothing that human kindness and power could do for us was left undone. May the God of all grace bless you all.
MR. AND MRS. R, P. BEACH AND FAMILY.
