Vincent “Vince” Hornberger, 85, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, Iowa. Vince was born on July 6, 1927 to Charles and Lena (Kieninger) Hornberger on a farm in Lincoln Township in Winneshiek County, Iowa. He moved to Cresco in 1930. He attended Cresco Public Schools, and served as the Senior Class President in 1945. Five days following graduation, Vince was sworn into the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Coronis ARL 10 and the U.S. Typhon ARL 28 in Japan and China area. He was Honorably Discharged in August of 1946. After his discharge from the military, he attended the Upper Iowa University for one year. On June 2, 1947 he went to work for Interstate Power Company in Decorah. IN 1948 he transferred to Cresco where he worked until October 31, 1989 when he retired as Service Representative for the Cresco area after 42 years and 4 months with the Interstate Power Company. On October 11, 1953, he married Clara Wohlsdorf at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. To this union 2 daughters were born, Sandra and Linda. Vince joined the Cresco Fire Department in 1954 and retired after 50 years of service in 2004. During this time he served as chief from 1973 – 2003. He also served as president of the Iowa Fire Chiefs from 1981-1982. He was on the Governor’s Committee for Iowa Valor Awards in 1982. He was a member of the Wisconsin Firefighter’s Association and the International Fire Chief’s Association as well. In 1988 Vince received the Roger Moody award from the Iowa Fire Chief’s Association. He served for many years on the Howard County Fair Board and the Oaklawn Cemetery Board, where he served as President. Was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion, the Cresco Planning and Zoning Board for 25 years, and in the IBEW Union for over 60 years, and in 2011 received the Hall of Fame from the Cresco Times Plain Dealer. He is survived by a daughter Linda (Tom Brown) of Yucca Valley, CA, a brother Ralph Hornberger of Alexandria, MN, and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Clara in 1989, and a daughter Sandra at the age of 8 years and 8 months on November 11, 1967, and a sister Gertrude Coleman in 1979.

Cemetery:
Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.
