Robert Martin Vagts of Harmony, MN, 93, died peacefully at home and surrounded by family on Saturday February 9, 2013. Robert was born June 20, 1919 in Albain Township, Howard County, Iowa to Paul and Marie (Jensen) Vagts. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, Iowa and confirmed there on May 28, 1933. On May 27, 1941, Robert was married to Caroline Michel at her parents’ home near Granger, Minnesota, officiated by Pastor Leo Moench, a personal friend of the groom. Robert and Carol began farming east of Cresco, Iowa. In March 1948, they moved to their farm near Bristol Center, Minnesota where they continued to farm throughout his life eventually farming with two of his sons – Jim and Bob. Robert and Carol moved to Harmony in 1971, never really retiring from the farm. They moved to Heritage Grove in 2002, two of the first residents of the new facility. Robert’s lifelong loves were his family, his church and farming. He was active in all aspects of congregational life at St. Matthew in Granger, MN including serving as chairman of the building committee for the new church structure in 1954. While his life was farming, fishing in Canada was a real passion that he shared with family and friends. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; Carol, his wife of 69 years; two daughters-in-law: Judy (Thorson) Vagts (Bob) and Diane (Jacobson) Vagts (Jim); and a sister-in-law, Geneva Vagts. He is survived by his five children Jim of Harmony, Bob (Margaret) of Lanesboro, Jerry (Valerie) of St. Paul, Ken (Sharon) of Hastings and Joann (Terry Grabau) of Chisago City; his brother Gareth of Cresco, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren: Mark, Todd and Carrie (Jim); Kim, Michelle and Angie (Bob); Rachel, Amalia, Thatcher and Paul (Jerry); Tom, Chris and Mike (Ken); Yvette (Joann) and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Following a short illness, he died at home with family members at his side. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Mayo Hospice and the caring community of residents and staff at Heritage Grove for making it possible for him to die peacefully at home. He was deeply cared for until the end.

Burial will be in the St. Matthew Cemetery in Granger, MN.
