James Shaw, aged 71 years, died at the family home, Lee avenue and 7th street, at 3:30 yesterday afternoon, after an acute illness of eleven hours from pneumonia. Deceased had been in frail health for a number of years from pulmonary diseases, but the day and evening previous to his death he was in his usual health. About four o’clock yesterday morning he complained of illness and a physician was summoned, but no unersiness{sic} was felt by his wife during the day, deceased retaining complete consciousness until the last moment, and as his wife stood at his bedside ministering to hiscomfort{sic} he quietly changed the position of his head on the pillow and breathed his last like one passing into sleep.
James Shaw was a native of Glasgow, Scotland. He was brought to the United States by his parents at the age of 8 years, the family settling in Illinois. Later they removed to Howard county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. During the civil war he was a member of the 38th Iowa regiment, serving three years. In 1868 he was married to Ella L. Emmons, and came to Milbank, N. D., in 1880. Twenty-eight years ago the family took up their home in Madison, where they have since resided, deceased, on account of frail health, living a retired life, with his wife spending several winters in Florida, and had planned to depart for that state next Tuesday to spend the winter. Deceased is survived by a widow, one daughter and three sons; Mrs. J. W. Goff of this city, L. J. Shaw of Watertown, V. L. Shaw of Plaza, N. D, and W. J. Shaw of Kalmazoo,{sic} Mich., all of whom were present at the funeral, also Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Emmons of Cresco, Iowa, the former a brother of Mrs. Shaw.

The funeral was held from the home Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, Rev. R. L. Palmerton of the First Baptist church, conducting the service.—From The Madison (S. D.) Daily Leader of Nov. 27th.
