He was married to Sophia Winn in the year 1847. To the union was born three children, one girl dying in infancy, and one daughter, Mrs. Fannie E. Doolittle, of Whitewood, S. D., and a son, William Smart, of Deadwood, S. D., who survive their father. He is also survived by three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Smart came to America, settling in Ohio in 1851 where he remained until 1856 when he came to Howard County, Iowa, settling in New Oregon Township.
Mr. Smart laid his wife away in the New Oregon Cemetery in May, 1875.
He was a man of wonderful energy and up to four days of his death insisted upon waiting on himself, refusing to allow anyone to take charge of him. He gave up the battle of life almost as soon as he found he could not care for himself.
Mr. Smart passed away on Monday, November 23rd, at the age of 90 years.
The funeral services were conducted from the Congregational church by the pastor, Dr. D. T. Robertson, at 1:30 p. m., November 25th, and the body was laid away in the New Oregon Cemetery.
