Death of Alphonso Brooks.
From George Humphrey we learn of the death of a former Cresco resident, Alphonso Brooks, who passed away July 7th, at the Soldiers Home in Washington, at the age of 71 years. He was born in New York state and came to Iowa with his parents, and was reared on a farm. He enlisted in Capt. Hayden's 3rd Iowa Battery from Winneshiek County, November 3, 1861. He was mustered out, January 8, 1862, re-enlisted December 23, 1863, and was mustered out October 23, 1865, at Davenport, Iowa. He followed the blacksmith trade for years in Cresco where he raised a family of five sons and two daughters, all of whom survive him.
