Benjamin Ovitt Markham was born in Great Valley, Cattaraugus county. New York. April 8th, 1829, and died at his home near Cresco, la., Oct. 11th, 1914, aged 85 years, 6 months and three days. In 1854 on Oct. 17th he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Bowe and to this union was born 6 children: William J. Markham, of Cresco, Ia., Mrs. George Sage, of Spooner, Wis., Mrs. Elmer Woodward, who passed to her reward some ten years ago, Mrs. Albert Hess, of Cedar Falls, la. and Misses Hattie and Jessie Markham, who lived with their father since their mother died 21 years ago. Mr. Markham was converted and joined the Methodist church when he was a young man and has been a faithful and loyal member ever since. A true chistian, a kind, loving father and faithful friend, he will be missed from the family circle and from the community. In addition to the children that are living there was present at the funeral service, a niece, Mrs. Mary Robertson, of Tomah, Wis.
The funeral was held at the home south of town on Tuesday afternoon in charge of Rev. Will Kirwin, pastor of the Methodist church, and interment was made at New Oregon cemetery.
