Elma Man Killed Sunday.
Sunday afternoon at about 5 o’clock, a car driven by Elmer O'Neil, in company with Dennis Burns, Dan Lynch and Arthur Rumsey turned turtle into the ditch about one mile south of Deerfield. The boys had driven to Charles City, and being a little late in their return, they drove at a high rate of speed in order to reach Alta Vista, where Mr. Lynch is the agent. They came to a chuck hole and Mr. O’Neil became excited, being a new driver. He tried to dodge it and the result was that the car turned over twice and stood right side up in the road about 30 feet beyond, with a broken wheel, windshield and lights and steering wheel. The steering wheel must have crushed Mr. O’Neil’s chest causing the ribs to puncture the lungs and resulting in his death at 2:30 a. m. Monday. The rest of the occupants were somewhat bruised. The accident is especially distressing to Elmer O’Neil’s widowed mother, Mrs. Margaret O’Neill, three sisters, Maggie, Edna and Lillian, and one brother, Vern. The young man was but about nineteen years of age.—New Hampton Tribune.
