Jack LeMar Darland, Sr., 87, of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, IA.
Jack was born on January 5, 1922 at Barnes City, Iowa, the son of George Farrell and Erma Hazel (Jones) Darland.
He graduated from West Waterloo High School. He entered Iowa State Teachers College in 1940. In October of 1942 he entered the U.S. Navy and served until he was honorably discharged in October of 1945. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1948. He received a Bachelors of Science degree in Social Studies and Physical Education, and also obtained his Masters Degree in Physical Education in 1955 from the University of Iowa.
Jack was united in marriage to Marguerite "Peggy" Prichard on April 11, 1942 at Hannibal, MO. Jack taught school and coached basketball for 9 years at Oelwein, IA; 4 years at Iowa Wesleyan College at Mt. Pleasant, IA; one year at Vinton, IA; 5 years at West High in Waterloo, IA; and taught 15 years at Cresco, IA.
Jack enjoyed his years teaching and coaching, following the Iowa Hawkeyes, playing golf, family outings, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Peggy, 6 children: Mike (Barb) of Oelwein, Polly (Dave) Suntken of Clear Lake, IA, Tim (Marilyn) of Iowa Falls, IA, Jack Jr. (Robin) of Dike, IA, Pat of Cresco, IA, and George of Strawberry Point, IA, 11 grandchildren: Jason & Tom Darland, Jacci (Darland) Meyers, Mike, Chris, Scott Suntken, Sommer, Liberty, Ian Darland, Tyler Darland, Justin Stensrud, 6 great-grandchildren, Kylinne Darland, Bennett & Jace Suntken, Riley & Shea Suntken, and Michael Darland, and one brother Bill (Nancy) Darland of St. Louis, MO.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Joyce Dahlberg, brother-in-law, Waldo Dahlberg, and a grandson Kyle Darland.Memorials:

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, IA from 5-7 p.m. on Monday evening and also one hour prior to services at the church.Service:
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Cresco, IA. It was Jack\'s wishes to be cremated after services and his remains placed in Oak Lawn Cemetery.Source: Lindstrom Funeral Home database
