Roger Mason, 90, of Lime Springs died Friday, June 12 at the Western Home in Cedar Falls.
Shortly after his birth in Black Hawk County on May 6, 1919, he was orphaned and placed with the Annie Whitmeyer Home in Davenport. At age 12, he began living with farm families in Howard County where he worked until age 17 when he joined the U.S. Navy. Roger served in the Navy from 1938 to 1948. Prior to and during World War II, he served on the heavy cruiser USS Louisville (CA-28) which was involved in numerous campaigns in the South Pacific. Later he was a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Lime Springs for more than 30 years, retiring in 1984.
Survived by his son, David Sr. (Cindi) of Cedar Falls; 5 grandchildren: Amanda Vittetoe of Chino Hills, California; David Jr. (Stacy) of Cedar Falls; Joseph (Jane) of Plainfield, Illinois; Hillary of Washington, D.C. and John of Cedar Falls; and 3 great-grandchildren: Sam, Sadie and Molly.
Preceded in death by his wife, Lois I. Mason.

Memorials:
Memorials may be directed to the Lime Springs United Methodist Church.

Cemetery:
Burial will be at at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Visitation:
Public visitation on Sunday, June 28 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Service:
Services: 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2009 at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church.
