James Louis Schmitt, age 58, died after a year long battle with cancer on Sunday, January 18, 2009, at the Seasons Hospice in Rochester, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Notre Dame Parish in Cresco, IA. Burial followed services on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Marys Cemetery in Little Turkey, IA.

James Louis Schmitt was born June 25, 1950 at St. Josephs Hospital in New Hampton, Iowa the son of Vern and Irene (Kriener) Schmitt. He attended Holy Trinity Grade School and Rudolphinum High School in Protivin, Iowa. After attending North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, he was drafted into the Army where he served two years in Viet Nam as a Military Policeman. After returning home, he received a bachelors degree in Business Administration from University of Northern Iowa. His love of farming brought him back to Jackson Junction where he worked for local farmers and eventually moved to the Cresco area.

On July 16, 1977, James was united in marriage to Deborah Ann Peters at Blessed Sacrament Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. They became the proud parents to son Michael. They made their home Cresco, Iowa.

Jim was active in the Notre Dame Parish at Cresco, Iowa as a Eucharistic minister and choir member. What he loved most were family gatherings, scouting with his son, working in his yard, and hunting with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah of Cresco, one son Michael and wife Megan of Marion, Iowa. Brothers and Sisters: Joanie Schmitt-Reagan (Michael) of Vacaville, California; Jerry Schmitt (Kristi) of Newport Beach, California; Judy Schmitt of Annville, Kentucky; Mark Schmitt (Suzanne) of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; Carol Steinbeiser (Craig) of Allen, Texas; and Jean Wiemann (Leon) of Meservey, Iowa. As well as by several nieces and nephews: Shannon & Casey Reagan; Kayla, Kelsey & Ryan Schmitt; Adam, Jason, Tyler & Megan Schmitt; and Krista, Scott & Justin Steinbeiser.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents Vern and Irene Schmitt.
