ELMA — Arnold F. Knecht, 84, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000 at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton of natural causes.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11 at Immaculate Conception Church, Elma with Reverend Roger R. Rethamel officiating. Theresa Burke was the organist and accompanied the Immaculate Conception Church choir. Marc Knecht was the lector. Gift bearers were Justin Knecht and Jamie Nester. Eucharistic ministers were Amber Knecht and Marc Knecht. Mass servers were Samantha Burke, Nicole and Vern Klobassa. Arnold's children placed the pall.

Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery, Elma with Eugene, Mike, Jerome, Dennis, Irvin and Brian Knecht serving as casket bearers. The American Legion John Frahm Post, Elma provided graveside Military Rites.

Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10 at Conway Funeral Home, Elma, where there was a 4 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary and a 7 p.m. Parish Scripture Service.

Arnold Francis Knecht was born March 21, 1916, near Whittemore, IA, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Derner) Knecht. He was baptized at St. Michael Church, Whittemore on April 2, 1916. He attended the St. Michael's Catholic School in Whittemore. After his schooling he helped on the family farm and also helped with custom farm work for the neighbors. He entered the U.S. Army on July 17, 1941 at Fort Des Moines. On June 7,1943 he united in marriage to Helen Veronica Fangman at St. John's Catholic Church, Bancroft. Arnold was then sent overseas to serve in England and France during WWII. On Oct. 19, 1945 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army at the Separation Center, Jefferson: Barracks, MO. While in the service he was a Technician Fourth Grade 15th Port. After returning from the service the couple farmed near Whittemore, then moved to Bancroft and then Elma to the farm where he was currently residing. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Elma, Elma Knights of Columbus Council 4144 and the American Legion John Frahm Post, Elma. He was good at fixing things, welding and tinkering.

Survivors include five sons, Tom (Angela), Pine Bush, NY; Jim (Barb), Marysville KS; Dale, Forest City; Dean (Sheila), Kalona and Darrel (Cindi), Elma; one daughter Linda Knecht, Elma; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ed, Whittemore and Herb, Colwell and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Helen on Oct. 27, 1995 and one brother, Wilbur.
