from Elma library collection assembled by Marian (Marr) McGeeServices were held at First Baptist Church, LeRoy, at 1:30 p.m. Monday for Gladys M. Fortney, LeRoy resident who died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at the Adams Health Care Center. She had been a resident at that facility for only a short time.
The Rev. Jerry Olson officiated at the services. Interment was in the LeRoy Cemetery.
Gladys M. Jerred was born April 17, 1918 in Chester, Iowa, and attended schools in the Chester and Riceville, Iowa areas. She married Glen Fortney at Osage, Iowa Feb. 5, 1938. She was a homemaker and also worked outside the home helping others. She was a 4-H leader in Howard County.
After moving to LeRoy in 1953 she worked as an egg candler for Mendelsohn and Hailing for 25 years. She also owned the G&G Drive- Inn for three years and the G&G Popcorn Stand for many years. After retirement she worked for Mower County Health Care.
During their retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Fortney traveled through Alaska and the Yukon in Canada. She enjoyed working with flowers and making quilts for her family.
Survivors include her husband, Glen; two sons, Kenneth, Mancelona, Mich., and Dan (Sandy) of Phoenix, Arizona; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Beatice Hanson, Rochester; Hazel Eng, Shaffer; Violet (Russel) Jacobson, Austin and Dawn (Julius) Munt, Robbinsdale, and a brother, Robert (Joyce) Jerred, Mission, Texas.
She was preceded in death by one daughter and two grandsons.
Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home, LeRoy, was in charge of arrangements.
