from Elma library collection assembled by Marian (Marr) McGeeWATERLOO - Virgil P. Cutsforth, 65, Waterloo, died Monday, April 17 at his home of natural causes.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 20 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Waterloo.
Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military rites conducted by Waterloo American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623, with flag folding by Waterloo Fire Rescue.
Visitation was Wednesday, April 19, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarurp Funeral Service, with a 7 p.m. Vigil Service and also one hour before services at the church.
Virgil Paul Cutsforth was born, July 19, 1934 in Howard County, the son of William L. and Elizabeth A. (McGrane) Cutsforth. He graduated from Lawler High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. In 1953 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. He married Norma Jean Ferrie on Feb. 6, 1956 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Cresco. In 1957 he started work with the Waterloo Fire Department, serving until his retirement on Aug. 31, 1989, as division chief. During his employment with the department, he also worked at various businesses in the Waterloo area, including Boettcher Furniture, McGregor Furniture, Roadway Express and Bill Doran Wholesale Florist.
Surviving are his children, Paula J. Hippe and fiance Dennis Hamand, Thomas V. (Debora) Cutsforth, Timothy P. (Vicky) Cutsforth, John P. Cutsforth, Jennifer L. Cutsforth and Sean P. Picken, all of Waterloo; Pam S. (Gary) Iverson, Readlyn, Kathleen M. (Jeff) Spence, Elk Run Heights; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three sisters, Arlene Kolthoff, Charles City, Mable Randall and Ida M. Yearling-Smith, both of Waterloo; four brothers, James, Calmar, William and LaVerne, both of Waterloo and Clete, Cottage Grove, MN.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Norma on Jan. 21, 2000; four brothers, Robert, Merle, Herbert and Glenn.
Memorials may be directed to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
