Dean Buls, age 61, of Lime Springs, Iowa, died on Saturday, March 5, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at Mitchell County Reginal Health Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2016, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Riceville, IA with Pastor Chris Gorshe officiating. Burial will be held in Howard Cemetery in Elma, IA. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 11, at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 407 Woodland Ave, Riceville, IA 50466. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the time of the service Saturday at the church.

Dean was born on April 10, 1954 to Clarence and Alvina Buls in Cresco, Iowa. He was a 1972 graduate of Riceville Community School. After high school he worked at the Howard County Equity in Elma and spent 26 years driving semi-truck, of which 17 years were driven for Hunt Transportation. He also spent 15 years as a quarry manager for Bruening Rock Products.

Dean had many passions in life, foremost being faith and family. He was united in marriage to April Lund on June 19, 1976, and spent his life as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished his family and never missed a chance to talk about his grandkids. Dean had a special bond with all of his children, loved spending time with them, and never missed an opportunity to let his opinion be known and tell them they were doing something wrong because it wasn't the way he would do it.

Dean's hobbies included going to auctions with April. He was also a ring man for Spring Valley Auctions in MN, where the joke was," He sold it and she bought it." These auctions also gave him the opportunity to buy sheets, blankets, and medical items that he donated to the church and other organizations. He was always helping others and never was too busy to help those in need.

He enjoyed the competition of playing softball and bowling with family and friends for most of his life. He loved driving truck and operating machinery, and was always busy working on the house and acreage. His attention to detail was always evident in everything he did.

Dean is survived by his wife, April, along with his three children, Vincent (Karen) of Tipton, Iowa, Alexander (Ashley) of Cresco, Iowa and Jennifer (Mark) of Mason City, Iowa; 3 grandchildren, Austin, Ashton, and Addisyn; 6 siblings, Leona (Doug) Leist of Lime Springs, Iowa, Lanny (Janet) of Independence, Iowa, Konnie (Kenny) Schmidt of Elma, Iowa, Gary (Shirley) of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Verla (Jim) Lensch of Lime Springs, Iowa, and Edward of Riceville, Iowa.

Dean was preceeded in death by his parents, Clarence and Alvina, and brother, William.
