Mason City - H. Reade Bronner, age 81, died Feb. 18, 2016, of complications from pneumonia and heart disease in Mason City, Iowa.

Born on Jan. 23, 1935 to Henry “Hank” and Helen (Grube) Bronner, he grew up on a farm in Albion Township. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Granger, Minn. He was educated at Lincoln School and graduated from Cresco High School. He enlisted in the United States Army and served for two years in Korea.

Upon his return, Reade wanted to become a police officer but was unable to enter the force because of his eyesight. Thus, he began farming, interrupted only by a three-year period during which he moved his family to Chicago and worked for the phone company. They lived on a dairy farm not far from where he grew up until they sold the livestock in 1987. He continued to live on the farm for the most part until he moved to Mason City in 2011.

Reade was passionate about television; World War II movies were his favorite. He also enjoyed occasional square dances over the years. At family gatherings, his colorful language and impaired hearing ensured that the entire family would hear his firmly-stated opinions.

Reade is survived by his children, Kristine Combs, Bryon (Heather) Bronner and Leanna (Nick) Bronner-Halfhill; his grandchildren, Nicole (Joshua) Lehman, Jessica Bronner, Miranda Combs, Joshua Bronner, Hannah Bronner and Jackson Halfhill; and his brother, John "Jack" (Beverly). He is also survived by his first wife, Sharon (Blomgren). His loyal, dedicated friend, Charlotte Stensrud, also survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard Bronner; and an infant sister, Donna.

Iowa Cremation in Cedar Rapids served the family.
