Emma M. Schempp, was born Sept. 4, 1870 near Lawler, Iowa. Her parents were John and Christina Schempp. At the age of 18 she was baptized and became a member of the Baptist Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. She was a faithful member of the Church. She was untied in marriage to Albert Stockdale on Feb. 12, 1891. They farmed in Howard County during much of their married life. In 1915 they moved to a farm in Minnesota. To this union were born 3 daughters and 4 sons, John W. Stockdale, Charley Stockdale, Mrs. Glen Jones, Mrs. Ernest Tibbals all of Lime Springs; Lee Stockdale of Chester; Ernest Stockdale of Cresco; and Mrs. Ward Huseman of Gardena, Calfornia. Mrs. Stockdale's husband passed away on July 20, 1938. It was at that time she moved to Lime Springs.
She had been in failing health the past 8 years. It was in 1952 that Mrs. Stockdale became sick and spent 16 months in the care of her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Tibbals of Lime Springs. It then became necessary for her to enter a rest home. At the time of her death she was a patient at the home of Mrs. Earl Miller in Lime Springs. Mrs. Stockdale passed away Friday morning Feb. 19, 1960 at the age of 89 years, 5 months, and 15 days. She is survived by her 3 daughters and 4 sons, 35 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Stockdale knew that the responsibility of rearing a family was more than just feeding them and clothing them. It included the giving of spiritual nurture as well. As the years passed by the family of Mrs. Stockdale grew larger and larger. Yet the love she had for her family remained constant and her devotion toward them never diminished. Her prayers for them was that their love for their dear ones be excelled only by their love for God.
