John W. Davis
John W. Davis was born November 28, 1918, to Thomas S. Davis and Delia Ramaker Davis on the family farm north of Lime Springs. He attended the rural school in Foreston Township through grade 3, then attended Lime Springs Public School and graduated in 1936. While he was in school, John enjoyed band and sports, especially basketball.
John (named for his grandfather) took on many family responsibilities at an early age. His father had died when John was eight years old, and his mother was severely handicapped with rheumatoid arthritis. John drove the family car when he could barely see over the dashboard, and learned the value of money as he was growing up in the Depression Years. His heart was always on farming, so he was more than ready to return to the family farm soon after graduation from high school.
Like his father before him, John met and married a Minnesota girl. John and Hazel Borgan were married on October 25, 1940 and became an active farm couple. They left the farm for four brief years while John was manager of the Co-op in Lime Springs, but after 4 years, love of the farm and working with Mother Nature called him back to the family farm.
John and Hazel are the parents of Kathleen Linderbaum of Cresco, Dianne Kiefer of Ottumwa, and Thom- another Thomas S.- of Grand Mound, Iowa. There are six grandchildren: Lis, Mark and Aaron Linderbaum and Kristi, Bradley, and Nicole Kiefer. Also surviving are two sisters and one brother: Elvira Panncke of Postville, Ia.; Dorothy Davis of Charles City, Iowa and T. Wayne Davis of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents.
