Mary Ellen Prestegaard, age 91, of Lee, Ill. passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center in Illinois.
She was born April 7, 1922 in Lime Springs, Iowa, the daughter of Glen and Ruby (Stockdale) Jones. Mary Ellen attended school in Lime Springs and graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where she met her husband, Henry “Hank” Prestegaard. Mary Ellen and Hank were married July 15, 1943 in Sherman, Texas, before he went overseas with the U.S. Army during WWII. Mary Ellen taught school in Latimer, Iowa then at Lee Elementary School in Lee. In 1976 Mary Ellen opened the Hardanger Hus Scandinavian Gift Shop in their home and operated the shop for over 35 years. She was very active in Village of Lee activities and at the First Lutheran Church in Lee.
Survivors include three sons, Douglas (Sharon) of Tampa, Fla., Henry (Ann) of Steward, Ill. and Eric (Luanne) of Bath, Ohio; five grandchildren, Dr. Ben (Stacey) Prestegaard of Kent, Ohio, Matt (Jen) Prestegaard of Newport, Minn., Ingrid (Philip) Royster of Tampa, Fay Prestegaard of Steward and Michelle Sprowls of DeKalb; and five great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Emily and Ashley Royster of Tampa, Logan Prestegaard of Kent, Ohio and Maren Prestegaard of Newport, Minn. Also surviving are three sisters, Jeanette Andera of Ames, Iowa, Olive Walker of Urbandale, Iowa and Marilyn Moen of Reads Landing, Minn. and Alberta, Ala.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry in 2001, and a brother, John G. Jones of Lime Springs.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 20 at First Lutheran Church in Lee with Reverend Henrietta Milner officiating. Burial will follow at First Lutheran Cemetery in Lee with lunch to follow at the church. Friends may call from noon Saturday until the time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for First Lutheran Church in Lee and DeKalb County Hospice. Arrangements were completed by Jacobson Funeral Home in Shabbona, Ill.Source: Lime Springs Herald, July 15, 2013
