Daniel Joseph “Dan” Schroetter, age 18, of Lime Springs, Iowa, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2013 at home.
Daniel was born on Jan. 1, 1995 in Cresco, Iowa, to Steve Schroetter and Brenda Roethler. He was currently employed at Featherlite in Cresco.
Daniel enjoyed golfing with his Dad, tossing a football with his brothers, hanging out with friends, working in the field, anything John Deere and fishing with anyone who was able to go. He especially enjoyed bow hunting in a peaceful woods.
His parents; two brothers, Joshua and Jacob; maternal and paternal grandmothers, Lavonne Klein and Doris Schroetter; step grandfather, Wayne Klein; and several cousins, aunts and uncles survive Daniel.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandfathers, Donald Roethler and Earl Schroetter; half brother, Brandon Pearson; and his uncles, Bill Turner, Bruce Roethler, Mike Hall and Denny Baugh.
His family and friends will sadly miss Daniel.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lime Springs with Pastor Maureen Hagan officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Riceville, Iowa. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco is in charge of arrangements.

Community shocked by Daniel Schroetter death
The Howard County Sheriff’s Department was called to the Brenda Roethler residence in Lime Springs on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 12:21 p.m. It appeared that Daniel Joseph Schroetter, who was born Jan. 1, 1995 and was 18 years old, stepped out the back door of the home and shot himself with a shotgun. The state medical examiner is conducting an autopsy.
The suicide was a shock to the area. Administrators at the school were already working on a plan of action after being informed of the death on Sunday afternoon.
Principal Tim Felderman of Crestwood High School stated, “The students, faculty, and staff of the Howard-Winneshiek Community Schools would like to extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to Daniel’s family and friends. In the next few weeks, we will continue to offer any needed support to Daniel’s family, friends and to all students, faculty and staff of the Howard-Winneshiek Community Schools.”
Counselors who talked with Daniel’s friends on Monday morning included high school guidance counselor Trish Hartman, junior high counselor Doug Sickles, former principal Jim Zajicek, Pastor Mike Simiele, New Hampton High School Principal Dr. Sara Updegraff and Keystone AEA staff Katie Fisher and Angie Raddatz.
Supt. John Carver added, “When something like this happens, it affects the whole community. We need to redouble our efforts to let students know they are extremely worthy and that they can reach out to us—the school, the community.”Source: Lime Springs Herald, April 26, 2013
