Lawrence Caroll (Grandpa Gunder) Gunderson passed away peacefully at the Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice in Decorah, Iowa surrounded by his family on Jan. 7, 2012.
Larry was born on Jan. 4, 1931 in Austin, Minn. to Lawrence T. and Clara (Hoseth) Gunderson. He attended grade and middle school in Austin until eighth grade. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1949. He was a Spartan letterman in football, baseball and basketball.
He served aboard the USS Deuel APA 160 as a Classified Store Keeper in the U.S. Navy for four years. He was fortunate to be able to travel to Japan, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean ports.
After returning to the states, he was then united in marriage to Marlys Ann Hoppie on Oct. 25, 1958. To this union four daughters were born, Tammi, Vicki, Cindi and Terri. They later were divorced.
Larry, also known as Gundy, Sonny, Junior, LC, Grandpa Gunder and Fearless worked at Cresco Machine all his life until he retired. He traveled Northeast Iowa, Southeast Minnesota and called upon numerous small automotive and mechanic business owners whom he became longtime friends with.
Early in his adult life, he had the opportunity to be sponsored as a professional bowler. He declined this opportunity in order to stay home, run the family business and raise his four daughters. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, walking, bike riding and stopping in local business establishments to visit. He enjoyed playing cribbage, cards and dominoes with his mom while she was a resident at the Evans Memorial Home. He was also a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Cresco. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His is survived by his four daughters, Tammi (Arlyn) Skoda of Cresco, Vicki (David) Disney of Urbandale, Iowa, Cindi, (fiancé Jeff Kath) Grover of Cresco and Terri (Craig) Cotant of Cresco. Also, his 12 grandchildren, Adam (Jessica), Amanda (Erik), Amelia (Damian); Joel (Samantha), Jeff and Elizabeth; Brandon (Jill) and Samantha; Jenn, Andy, Emma and Ty; in addition to six great-grandchildren, Aidan, Awnan, D.J., Kassidy, Lydia, and Wyland. Surviving him are one sister, Rheta Wilson; one uncle, Robert Gunderson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, mother, two brothers, aunts and uncles and one great-grandson, Aries Minter.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco, Iowa. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, as well as one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.
