RITES AT CRESCO
FOR GUN VICTIM
~
Clement J. Carolan Killed
By Accidental Blast
~
Cresco, Ia. - Funeral services for Clement J. Carolan, 32, of Chester, will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Assumption Catholic Church at Cresco. The Rev. Gregory Hemeseth, pastor of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church of Chester will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery west of Cresco.

Carolan was killed Sunday afternoon by the accidental discharge of a gun which he took from its place on the wall in the basement of his café at Chester. He went from the home of his brother-in-law, Parnell Huber, where he and his family were visiting, to the café to get the gun.

He intended to shoot pigeons which were said to be a pest around the Huber place, it was reported. His body was found by members of his family after he did not return to the Huber home. He was alone when the accident happened.

After investigation by Howard County Coroner L. J. Peckosh, Sheriff Percy Haven and County Attorney Frank D. Elwood, the corner said that death was apparently accidental and that no inque would be needed.

Carolan was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip J. Carolan, of Ridgeway. He was born at Ridgeway March 27, 1917. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy for three years. He received his discharge in March 1945.

He then worked for his father-in-law, Clarence Huber, in the Huber café at Cresco. He married Geraldine Huber June 6, 1945. Before going to Chester, March 1 of this year, he operated a café in Rockford for eight months.

He is survived by his widow and two children, Jimmy Joe and Judy Ann; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Carolan, and five brothers, Jack, Philip, and Fred Carolan of Ridgeway, Thomas of Washington, D. C. and Leonard, of Decorah; one sister, Marie preceded him.
