Arnold “Ozzie” Leon Osenga, 90, of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville, Ill.
Ozzie was born on January 16, 1921 in Lime Springs, Iowa to Simon and Stena Josephine (Osland) Osenga. He graduated from the Lime Springs High School in 1938. He farmed with his father until he entered the United States Army on August 8, 1942. Ozzie served with the 1474th Engineer Maintenance Company as a parts clerk in France, Germany and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged on February 7, 1946. Upon leaving the Army, he was employed by Cresco Machine, and worked there until his retirement.
On October 27, 1946 he married Helen R. Smith. To this union two children were born, Verla and Ruth. Helen passed away in October of 1963. He later married Ethel Hopperstad on January 3, 1969. She later passed away in October of 1980. Ozzie then married Olga (Risdahl) Sanderson on May 20, 1983. Olga passed away in October of 1996.
Ozzie was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, the United Methodist Church, the Midwest Tool Collectors and I.O.O.F. He enjoyed collecting tools, attending auctions, woodworking, spending time with family and traveling around to local shops to visit with friends. He was also well known for the peanut brittle he made at Christmas time.
He is survived by two daughters, Verla Adams of Jacksonville and Ruth (Robert) Neptune of San Diego, Calif.; four step-children, David (Diane) Hopperstad of Waterloo, Iowa, Jerry (Sarah) Risdahl of Morristown, Tenn., Diane (Dave) Hassig of Plainview, Minn. and Marion (Scott) of Tyler, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three wives; a granddaughter, Jamie Murphy; a sister, Norma Zak; and a brother, Lyle Wayne.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Burial was in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.
