Irvin W. Munkel was born on February 18, 1914 at Charles City, Iowa, the son of Walter G. and Helen C. (Valenta) Munkel. As a small boy, Irvin moved with his family to Lime Springs where he attended school. While in school, Irvin was a good basketball and baseball player. Following graduation from high school, Irvin and his father did custom baling throughout Iowa and Nebraska.
On December 27, 1941, Irvin was united in marriage to Roberta Cook at Osage, Iowa. They lived in Iowa, although they spent time in Nebraska building houses for the Army. In 1944, Irvin was drafted in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1946. Irvin returned home following the service and spent most of the remainder of his life doing construction.
Irvin liked to hunt and fish. He liked flowers and was well known for the size of his garden. He had the ability to make everyone laugh with his joke telling.
