Eugene R. Munkel, 82, of Lime Springs, Iowa passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2010 at the Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.
Gene Munkel was born August 22, 1928 to Walter and Helen Munkel of Lime Springs. Gene was married to Edna (Lee) Munkel on December 26, 1952. There were two children born to this union, Michael and Beverly.
Gene served his country in the Navy, May 18, 1948 to April 24, 1952. He was in Damage Control on the ship, “U.S.S. Mt. McKinley” during the Korea War. He was honored with the National Defense Metal, 2 Battle Star Metals and the Korea Service Metal. He belonged to the American Legion, Post 545 where he served in many different positions. He was also Commander of Post 545 a few times.
Gene took pride in his accomplishments as a carpenter. “Geno” enjoyed hunting, fishing, socializing and “rambling” with his friends. During the summer, you would find him spending time in his garden. Of course he would always plant more than he needed, so then he would share with his many friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Helen Munkel; his wife, Edna Munkel; a son, Mike Munkel; and brothers, Pete and Stanley Munkel.
