As written by Madlyn G. McDowell Jones
Madlyn was born in Chester, Iowa on June 6, 1915 to Martha and James McDowell. She was the “middle” one of five children; the others being Richard, Russell, Jane and Ruth. Her father was a barber in Chester and Mother a housewife. Madlyn graduated from Chester High School in 1933. She was on the girls’ softball and basketball teams. She was employed as a receptionist in dental and doctor offices and the United States Post Office.
December 3, 1938 she married Harold R. Jones at a Methodist parsonage in New Hampton, Iowa. During World War II she sailed on the same ship as her husband. She got a job through the U.S. Coast Guard and was assigned as a second cook to the same ship as Harold, who was in the Merchant Marines.
December 7, 1948 their daughter Lavonne Selene was born.
Madlyn was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking, serving and guests. Her home, family and friends were very dear to her.
She was a member and Sunday School teacher of the Lime Springs, Iowa Methodist Church, later transferring to Stewartville, Minn. and for 27 years was a resident of Sebring, Florida and member of the Sebring United Methodist Church, member of the Francis II Association and Chairman for 12 years of the Twin Park Bridge Club.
Ironically Sept. 26, 2004 on Harold’s birthday, Madlyn was involved in a fourth hurricane which destroyed her home.
After much thought, time and prayer Madlyn realized she shouldn’t live alone any longer, and on December 10, 2004 moved to Brighton Gardens Assisted Living at Lakewood, Colo.
She transferred her church membership to the Chester, Iowa Methodist Church where as a child she started Sunday School.
Survivors include daughter Lavonne, and son-in-law Dennis Nesheim of Lakewood Colo., cousins, nieces, nephews, brother-in-law and friends.
Interment in the Chester Hill Cemetery Chester, Iowa.
