Wendell A. VanderBie passed away on Friday, March 12, 2010 at the Stewartville Care Center. He was 95 years old. He had resided there for two years.
Wendell was born on October 22, 1914, in Cherry Grove, Minn. to Roy and Bessie VanderBie. When Wendell was one-year-old, he moved with his parents to Lime Springs, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Lime Springs High School. After working for his dad in the hardware business for one year, he attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. He graduated from Cornell with a business degree. It was at Cornell that Wendell met his future wife, Margaret “Peg” Chalice. They were married July 24, 1938 at Osage, Iowa.
After their marriage, Wendell continued to work for his father at VanderBie’s Hardware until he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard during WWII. He was in the communications and radar divisions. He also transported wounded American soldiers from England and France back to the United States.
After the war, Wendell and Peg continued to live in Lime Springs and raised their daughter, Ann. Wendell went into partnership with his dad. Between he and his dad, they owned the hardware store for more than 60 years.
Wendell was involved in all aspects of his town and church. He was on the City Council, Commercial Club, most committees of the Lime Springs United Methodist Church, the swimming pool, a member of the Lime Springs American Legion for over 60 years and Masons. His great love was music and he enjoyed singing in the church choir for over 60 years. He also sang in the State Line Male Chorus. He enjoyed traveling, playing golf, making stained glass and playing bridge. He was very proud of his Dutch heritage.
Wendell and Peg retired in 1976 and spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz. Peg died in 1984. In 1985, Wendell married Marie Hall of Gig Harbor, Wash. They spent their time divided between his beloved hometown of Lime Springs, Mesa and Gig Harbor. Marie passed away in 2007. Wendell moved to Stewartville, Minn. in 2004, to be close to his daughter, Ann, and son-in-law Norm Stevenson.
Wendell is survived by his daughter, Ann of Stewartville; his sister, Harriett Paine of Downey, Calif.; and her children, Susan Jamison and Peter Paine. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Peg; his second wife, Marie; and his son-in-law, Norm Stevenson.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday March 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs. Memorials are suggested to Lime Springs United Methodist Church or the Stewartville Care Center. Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home of Stewartville.
