Charles “Pete” Garrison, age 79, of Edwardsville, died at 6:40 p.m., on Sunday, December 20, 2009.
He was born on Thursday, Sept. 25, 1930, in Cresco, Iowa, the son of the late C.O. and Geneva Anderson Garrison.
He married Carolyn Gaines on June 5, 1955. She survives.
Before receiving his degree from Iowa State, Mr. Garrison graduated from the U.S. Air Force Pilot Training School and then began his career as a test pilot, engineer and executive.
At McDonnell Douglas Corporation, he progressed from test pilot to engineering manager and was vice president of Intercomponent Business Operations.
As an experimental test pilot, Mr. Garrison was the second pilot ever to fly the F-15, and then became director of Flight Test and Operations and eventually vice president of the Flight and Laboratory Division. He also continued flying with the Missouri Air Guard from which he retired in 1985 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Garrison was a Senior Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, a Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, member of the Air Force Association, Sigma Gamma Tau National Honorary Society and a member of Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity. The U.S. Air Force awarded him the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Along with his wife, he is survived by two sons, Eric (Brenda) Garrison, of Edwardsville and Charles “Pat” (Betty) Garrison of Gansevoort, N.Y.; a daughter, Valerie (Mark) Clegg of Little Rock, Ark.; two brothers-in-law, Dr. Gerald (Barbara) Gaines of Georgia and Will Kelly of California; nine grandchildren, Sherry Clegg, Stephen Clegg, Jamie (Christian) Luetkemeyer, Bryan (Chelsea) Garrison, Cole Garrison, Trey Garrison, Kassidy Garrison, Ryan Garrison and Logan Garrison; his great grandson, Avan Luetkemeyer; nieces, Karla and Becky; and nephews, Mike, Christopher and Timmothy.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 23, at the Sunset Hill Funeral Home, with Rev. Mark Horn officiating.
Interment will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
