Stephen Hughes passed away on December 3, 2009 at the age of 80, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Stephen Wendell Hughes was the youngest of three children born to the union of George Thomas Hughes and Ruth Elizabeth (Watts) Hughes. He was born on October 24, 1929, at the home of his maternal grandparents, Ed W. Watts and Nancy (Ellis) Watts, in Corimona Township, rural Preston, Minnesota. Except for two years in the U.S. Army, Stephen lived his entire life in Lime Springs, Iowa.
He was married to Lois Estella Klinefelter at her home church in Peterson, Iowa, on September 24, l955. Stephen and Lois had one son, Charles Donald Hughes.
Stephen graduated from Lime Springs Independent High School in 1947. He worked as a mechanic, was in the corn shelling business for 14 years, was a Farm Bureau Insurance agent for 12 years and retired as a rural mail carrier in l992. Stephen served for two terms as a council member on the Lime Springs City Council.
He became a member of the United Methodist Church, Lime Springs, in 1942. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Susan Russell; two grand children, Jessica Susan (Hughes) Djuren of Des Moines, Iowa and Stephen William Hughes of Waukon, Iowa; his brother, Eddie (Gertrude) Hughes of Lime Springs; cousins, Gwendolyn Campbell of Byron, Minn., Wendell Watts of Reedsburg, Wis. and Luella Simpson of Las Vegas, NV; sister-in-laws, Joyce (Klinefelter) Finney of Stittsville, Ontario, Canada and Gwen Klinefelter, of Peterson, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lois, in 2002; his son, Charles, in 1987; brother-in-law, Robert Klinefelter; sister, Nancy Ruth (Hughes) Nath; and brother-in-law, John Nath.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 07, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.
