Anna May Davis, 103, of Lime Springs, Iowa passed away on Monday, November 9, 2009 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco, IA.
Anna May Davis was born on July 21, 1906. She attended public school in Lime Springs and graduated from Lime Springs High in 1923. Anna May then chose to attend Cornell College in Mt. Vernon to study Public School Music Education. She went on to graduate in 1927.
Anna shared her love of music through teaching in Lone Tree (IA), Van Meter (IA), and Orange Township (IA) before taking a position teaching general music circa 1936 in Decorah. Anna May taught in the Decorah Public school system until 1971. She combined a passion of history and traveling by taking many bus trips throughout her life touring historical sites in the United States. Anna shared that same passion for history locally by serving as the curator of Lidtke Mill for 28 years. She retired from that position at the age of 98. Anna was also well known in area as an expert genealogist.
Anna May was a gifted musician that played the organ for the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs from the time of installation in 1922 on into the new millennium. Anna also possessed a love of horticulture and the outdoors. For many years the residents of Lime Springs enjoyed her beautiful gardens that she spent many hours tending.
Anna May spent her final years resting (and still playing “Amazing Grace” on piano) at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco where she passed away at the age of 103 on Monday, November 9, 2009.
Anna May was preceded in death by her parents Morgan Benjamin Davis Sr. and Ella May (Pettit) Davis, her aunt Belle Pettit, and her brothers Morgan Benjamin Davis Jr. and Roland Davis.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews Sandy Davis, Bob Davis, Martha (Davis) Blann, John Richard (Dick) Davis, Bill Davis, and Benita (Davis) Van Dyke. Anna’s spirit still burns brightly in the hearts of the many great-nieces and great-nephews that loved her so and are blessed to share her legacy with their children.
Visitation: Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.
Service: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs.
