Phyllis Irene McCabe, 89, passed away on Jan. 26, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco, Iowa.
Phyllis Irene DeGreve was born on Sept. 17, 1922 and grew up on a farm north of Cresco near Granger. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1939. She married J. Flynn McCabe on Dec. 27, 1943. They farmed near Lime Springs until 1973 when Flynn died. She moved to Cresco and worked at the creamery there for several years and then worked for the Community Action Agency in Decorah until she retired in 1988. For the next several years she did volunteer work with the meals site operated by the Area One Agency on Aging. She has been a resident at the Care Center the past six years. She was a longtime member of St. Joseph’s and Notre Dame parishes.
Phyllis was a lover of dance band music and really enjoyed the sessions at the Care Center when “Tim the Music Man” played those old time tunes.
She was a loving mother of three children who survive her, Phillip (Melinda) of Grand Rapids, Mich., James (Pam) of Spring Valley, Minn. and Karen Reitz (Robert) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Aaron McCabe, Ashley McCabe, Megan (Dominic) McCabe Moore and Colin McCabe.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents, Phillip and Louise (Krueger) DeGreve; four sisters, Elsie Huntington, Genevieve Sjobakken, Malinda Peterson and Alice Stevenson; and two brothers, Sterling Huntington and Elmer DeGreve, who died in infancy.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 at the Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Memorials are suggested to the church or the recreation fund at the Care Center.
