CRESCO - Adah Phipps Steinmetz, age 89, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away on Dec. 29, 2015 at the Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point, Iowa.
She was born Oct. 14, 1926, in Allamakee County, the daughter of LeRoy and Mary Munz Phipps. At age nine, the family moved to the Decorah area, where Adah graduated from Decorah High School in 1943, went to college for two years, and many years later graduated from Upper Iowa University.
On Oct. 17, 1948, Adah was united in marriage to Leonard Steinmetz Jr. Her teaching career began in a one room school house in Winneshiek County. She retired after 33 years of teaching in Cresco, both fourth grade and first grade. She enjoyed knitting, bridge, golfing, her poodles and "Charlie" the cat. She was a life long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann (Barry) Hall, of Bradenton, Fla.; son, Mark Steinmetz of Cresco; granddaughters, Mary Hall of New York City and Dr. Elizabeth Hall of Burlington, Vt.; sister, Elaine (Roger) Doubek of Ridgeway; sister-in-law, Dorothy Phipps of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; and niece, Rhonda Phipps Peterson.
Adah was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; her parents; her brother, Merle T. Phipps of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; and a nephew, Todd Neubauer, Cresco.
