Harvey H. Hovey, 86, of Harmony, Minn. passed away Friday, April 22, 2011. Harvey died peacefully at an assisted living facility by his son’s home in Aurora, Ill.
He was born to Knute K. and Martha (Leitz) Hovey on January 10, 1925 in York Township, rural Lime Springs, Iowa. Harvey attended the Hovey Country School in York Township. On November 20, 1946 he married Mildred (Kleppe) Hovey.
Harvey and Mildred lived on a farm in rural Lime Springs for 60 years then they moved to the Harmony Manor in Harmony. Through the years, Harvey worked as a farmer of livestock and crops. He was a longtime member of Saetersdal Church of rural Harmony. He was once a member of the Echo Valley Saddle Club and hosted horse shows on his family farm.
Harvey had many interests he enjoyed. In his younger years, he loved to ride and raise horses and he played softball as a catcher. Other interests were gardening, visiting with neighbors, playing cards, watching westerns, visiting sale barns and following the Cubs, Yankees and the Dodgers. He will always be remembered for his love of children. Harvey loved to give kids a quarter or candy! In particular he had a sparkle in his eye and soft spot in his heart for his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.
Harvey is survived by two daughters, Beth (John) Taylor of Rochester, Minn. and Melody (Glen) Leimer of Truman, Minn.; and son Dennis Hovey (Liz Larson) of Aurora, Ill. He has five grandchildren, Brent (Kim) Taylor, Christina (Sam) Taylor Skinner, Nick (Tamsen) Leimer, Missy (Levi) Leimer Felion and Laura Taylor. Harvey has five great-grandchildren, Alivia Taylor, Ben and Nathan Leimer and Jack and Hayley Skinner. He is also survived by his brother Wayne Hovey.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred; his son, Daryl; an infant son; his brothers, Virgil and Harold; and his sisters, Goldie and Harriet.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 11:00 at Saetersdal Lutheran Church in rural Harmony. Burial will be at Saetersdal Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, Harmony. Friends and family may also visit one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
