Earl E. Johnson, 76, of Lime Springs, Iowa passed away October 4, 2010 at Regional Health Services in Cresco, Iowa.
Earl Eugene Johnson was born on March 28, 1934 to Thomas Johnson Jr. and Frances (McDermott) Johnson in Armstrong, Iowa. He graduated from Swea City High School in 1953. He farmed in the Armstrong area until 1955, when he moved to a farm southwest of Lime Springs. Earl was married to Kareen A. Bowers on May 31, 1959. To this union three children were born: Steve, Kathy and Gayle. Earl farmed with his brother, Gailen, until 1979. In 1981 Earl and his son, Steve, attended Northeast Iowa Technical Institute, graduating in 1982. Together they formed the partnership Johnson Electric. In May 1983 they opened Johnson Electric & Hardware in Lime Springs. Earl “retired” in 2002.
Earl enjoyed many hobbies over the years: baseball, softball, bowling, golf, horseback riding, fishing, hunting and traveling. One of Earl’s greatest joys was watching his grandchildren in their many activities.
Earl was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs and served on various boards. He was a charter-member of the Lime Springs Saddle Club and enjoyed managing and coaching the Chester Men’s Fast Pitch Softball Team. He was a member of the Lime Springs Community Club and enjoyed volunteering around the community.
Earl is survived by his wife Kareen; a son, Steve (Jill) Johnson of Lime Springs; two daughters, Kathy (Tim) Lichty of Lime Springs and Gayle (Dennis) Burnikel of Holmen, Wis.; six grandchildren, Luke (Lindsay) Johnson of Racine, Minn., Chelsea Johnson of Onalaska, Wis., Joshua (Brittany) Lichty of Little Canada, Minn., Kalley Lichty of St. Paul, Minn., Kyle Burnikel and Nathan Burnikel; two great-grandchildren, Beau and Cora Mae Johnson; two sisters, Arlene Volding of Morton, Ill. and Mavis Rosburg of Blue Earth, Minn.; one brother, Gailen (Judie) Johnson of Decorah, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Bernadine and his brother Don.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Cremation burial will follow church services at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs. Friends may greet the family for a time of luncheon and fellowship following services at the Lime Springs Community Center.
