DIED.

MERRIAM—In Cresco, Ia., Oct. 29, 1893, Mrs. Mattie D. Merriam, aged 39 years.

Deceased was a woman of rare attainments. As a newspaper correspondent, bright ideas, vigorous thought and pungent paragraphs flowed from her ready pen in deep, smooth, rapid, rounded periods. Her work in the newspaper line was devoted to the task of elevating mankind morally, socially and intellectually. She was a noble, good and pure woman who loved her sex and worked zealously to place it on a higher plane before the law for right and justice.

She was united in marriage with Dr. L. A. Merriam in 1873, locating in Cresco and remaining until they removed to Omaha 13 years ago. A few months past, she and her mother returned from Omaha, residing with her sister, Mrs. Kellow, where she died.

Some four weeks since, she returned from the World’s Fair somewhat indisposed, and from sheer exhaustion and nervous prostration passed to eternal rest last Sunday at noon.

Of a happy family of five, brother, mother and three sisters, only mother and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Kellow, remain. With them, in their deep sorrow, the PLAIN DEALER deeply sympathizes.

Transcriber’s Note: The gravestone shows date of death as October 28, 1892; however this obituary shows October 29, 1893.
