Dean Thompson, age 86, of Riceville passed away on Thursday August 13, 2015 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco, IA.
Dean Orlee Thompson was born Oct. 16, 1928, in Chester, Iowa, the son of Milton and Enid (Culbertson) Thompson. He was baptized at the Chester Lutheran Church on November 18, 1928 and confirmed in 1940. Dean attended local schools and graduated from Chester High School in 1946. Dean always joked he was in the top three of his class, of three graduates. Dean served his country in the United States Air Force serving in Korea. Dean was united in marriage to LaVonne Adele Wolthoff on December 27, 1953 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.
Dean farmed north of Riceville, where he milked cows, had a Black Angus cattle herd and raised feeder cattle. He had a special love for all his dogs, Duke, Trixie, Tippy, Lady, Chris, Lucky, JR, Shadow and Jenny. Dean loved to golf and he created "bucket golf" at the farm for his grand kids. He was a member of the Riceville Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing and playing cards. He loved to challenge people to a game of pool. He liked pheasant hunting with his dogs. He had his special spot in the kitchen where he would eat Von's great cooking and then visit and tell jokes.
Survivors include his children, daughter Gale (John) Koschmeder of Riceville, his sons: Mark
(Kris) Thompson of Bettendorf, IA and Jay (Cherise) Thompson of Ames, IA, 7 grandchildren...Robin, Ryan, Jason, Justin, Jessica, Cody and Cade and 2 great grandchildren...Maddox and Everly. Also surviving are two sisters, Donna Hanson of LeRoy, MN and Beth Sheeley of Des Moines, IA.He is preceded by his wife LaVonne in 2013, his parents, a brother Charles, and a sister Gay Zidlicky.
