Virgil D. Hovden, Sr., 78, formerly of Cresco, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the Lake City Care Center in Lake City, Minnesota. Virgil was born on September 30, 1936 in Winneshiek County, Iowa to Kenneth and Olga (Simonson) Hovden. He grew up on a farm in Madison Township. He graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1954. He then married Helen Burgess in 1967 in Cresco, Iowa. To this union two children were born. He worked as a farmer, and most of his life working was spent driving truck for various occupations. He lived in the Cresco area for most of his life. Following retirement he moved to Waucoma, Iowa for 15 years. Following a decline in health moved him to Lake City for the past 7 months. He was an avid sports fan for all of his life, especially for local sports in the northeast Iowa area, including the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Minnesota Vikings. He is survived by his two children, a daughter Laura (Tony) Miller of Lake City, Minnesota, and son Virgil (Tracie) Hovden of Littleton, Iowa, two grandchildren Skyler and Zachary VanLoan of Lake City, Minnesota, two sisters Rosemary Vopava of Ridgeway, Iowa, and Shirley Neubauer of Decorah, Iowa, and Roger (Carmen) Hovden of Ridgeway, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen, and two sisters Lila McCormick, and Janet Fisher.

Visitation:
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Friday evening, as well as one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Service:
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, Iowa.

Cemetery:
Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.
