Mildred Mae Pesek was born May 15, 1931, daughter of Charles and Mary (Moudry) Pesek in rural Howard County. She grew up south of Cresco and attended a one room country school house until the 8th grade. After completing the 8th grade, Mildred helped families by taking care of their children and babies. She also cleaned houses, worked at the Schley grocery store for 10 years, and helped on the family farm. Mildred was a hard working farm girl who worked in the field, hand milked 20 cows, hauled milk to farms, fed pigs and chickens, and baled straw. Mildred dated Harold Henkes for a year and a half before getting married on August 1, 1970, at Holy Cross Catholic Church at the age of 39. The couple did not invite anyone to the wedding, but all their neighbors were in attendance. Mildred enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing cards, flower and vegetable gardening, canning, collecting recipes and cooking, holidays, but most of all spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons David (Sue) Henkes of Independence, IA, and their children Lilly and Katie, and Dale (Amanda) Henkes of Cresco, IA, and their children Devin, Daric, Abbey, and Leah.
Preceding Mildred in death are her parents, husband Harold in 2009, and brothers Art Pesek and Bob Pesek.
