Elaine K. Murray, age 85, of Cresco, IA, died Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Notre Dame Parish, 116 E. 3rd St. Cresco, IA 52136. Burial will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery Cresco. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 3, at the church. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 404 N Elm Street, Cresco, IA, is in charge of arrangements.
Elaine Kathryn Vopava was born August 6, 1929, daughter of Joseph and Anna (Swehla) Vopava on a traditional Czech farm located between Ridgeway and Protivin, IA. She graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1947. Elaine met the love of her life Thomas Murray at the Inwood Ballroom in Spillville, IA. On February 11, 1950, Elaine married Thomas at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco. To this union seven children were born. Tom and Elaine owned and operated the Cresco Livestock Market until 1980. She enjoyed playing Bridge, going for long walks, serving as Howard County Supervisor, and was an excellent cook. Above all, Elaine adored her family. Elaine’s legacy will live on through her children and grandchildren. The old saying goes, “what you see is what you get.” Elaine’s family hopes that when you see them, you get a little of their mom.
Elaine is survived by her children Kathy (Dennis) Severson of Decorah, IA, and their children Craig, Luke (Emily Reinhart), and Molly, Michael J. (Jan) Murray of Elkader, IA, and their children Tom and Melissa, Patrick (Lynn) Murray of Cresco, IA and their daughter Meredith, Tammy (Chuck) Stevenson of Cresco, IA, and their children Lindsay (Andy) Schaapveld, their children Charlie, Nora, and Ross Schaapveld, Katie (Robert Devereaux) Stevenson, and Michael (Morgan) Stevenson, Anne (Bruce) Roelofs of Cresco, IA, and their children Jennifer (Chad Milosevich) Smith their daughter Madi Milosevich, Jacob and Samuel Roelofs, and Tracy (Mike) Meirick of Decorah, IA, and their children Liz, Abby, and Ann Meirick, her sisters-in-law Rosemary Vopava of Ridgeway and Lorraine Vopava of Protivin, brother-in-law Norman Bachmann, her Murray family, and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Thomas in 1981, son Tommy in 1961, a sister June Bachmann, and two brother’s Joseph and Robert Vopava.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Evans Memorial Home Activity Fund or charity of your choice.
