Iowa Plain Dealer April 10, 1890, P3 C2

Samuel L. Thomson of Oak Dale, died at his home on the morning of April 4th 1890, aged about 50 years. Deceased was born in Scotland, emigrating from there with his parents in infancy. His parents were residents of Beloit, Wis., where we first knew them, then the mother and children came to Iowa, locating near Lime Springs.

In 1862 he enlisted in the 38th Iowa infantry, and after faithful service was discharged at Houston, Texas, in September 1865. He was married the next year to Martha White, who survives him. They have five or six children, all of whom we believe are living. In 1875 and again in 1877, Mr. Thomson was elected sheriff of Howard county, honorably and faithfully discharged the duties of the office, serving all with equal fidelity. In 1870 Mr. Thomson settled in Oak Dale, on the farm where he died.

For two years or more the deceased has been in failing health but his friends did not anticipate fatal results so soon. The deceased was an honest man, a sincere friend, true as steel to his minutest promise, a good husband and loving parent, a good citizen in whom there was no guile. The family and friends have the sympathy of a sorrowing people, in their sad berevement.{sp}
