Death’s Harvest

Jonathan Salisbury, who has been a resident of this town, and one of the owners of the Vernon Springs mill since 1871, crossed the dark river for the spirit world, Saturday, Feb. 16, 1889, at about three o’clock in the morning.

He was born in Vermont, in the year 1816, when about six years old moving with his parents to New York, where he resided until in 1857, when he came to Iowa, residing a portion of the time in Dubuque, and later at Delhi in Delaware county until he came to this county as above stated.

In 1864 he enlisted in the 46th Iowa Infantry, at Dubuque, under Col. Henderson, and was discharged in Sept. of the same year.

In 1839 he married Margaret Dingmar, who crossed to the spirit land some five or six years since. To them five children were born, all of whom survive, Adeline, Henry C., DeWitt, Imogene and Fred. Three of the children, Henry C., DeWitt and Mrs. O. D. Lovejoy, reside here, while one daughter resides near Manchester, we believe, and Fred, the youngest son resides in Washington Territory.

Jonathan Salisbury was a righteous man, because he favored the right in act and deed, despising professions which bore no good fruit.

His funeral was held from the Congregational church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Alex. S. McConnell officiating, the Odd Fellows and the G. A. R., to both of which orders he belonged while living, having charge of the burial. Those who turned out to pay their respects to the memory of the virtuous dead were enough to more than twice fill the church.
