Ex-Sheriff James Carpenter passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. H. Patterson, in Cresco, Saturday April 14, aged nearly 89 years.

In 1857, when we became a resident of Howard County, Mr. Carpenter was its Sheriff, serving several years and always discharging his duties of the office with conscientious fidelity.

As a man and a neigbor{sp} he was every person's friend, above a mean act or a disreputable deed. In life he was loved and respected, the tears which his many kind deeds prevented flow profusely when he is gone.
