Iowa Plain Dealer March 22, 1888, P3 C4

We have hardly got over our sad surprise at the death of our honored townsman, Alonzo Pettit, when we are again called to mourn: this time for a bright, promising child, the youngest daughter of T. F. Van Leuven, Esq. She was her mother’s daily companion at the school in the Old Town, where Mrs. Van Leuven taught, and was in school as usual on Friday the 9th inst., and on the next Sunday she slept in death to wake in an eternal Sabbath. Her short life was full of comfort and interest to her family and friends.. To her pastor, Rev. J. H. Keppel, she was very dear. He felt it a hard task to preach her funeral sermon on Monday the 11st inst. He spoke from—“A door was opened in heaven.” Lucy Van Leuven was only seven years old; but she died not only as an innocent child but as a true believer.

Transcriber's Note: Monday the 11th isn't consistent with the 1888 calendar.
