OBITUARY.

Mrs. Mary B. Caward died Dec. 9th 1887, aged 67, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Chicago, where she had gone on the advice of her physician. For the last sixteen years her home has been in Cresco with her children. She was the mother of seven living children, six sons and one daughter, George, John B., James J., William B,. Russel S. and Albert H, Caward, and Mrs. Emma DeNoyelles.

She was born near Hull, Yorkshire, England, July 21st, 1820. At the age of seventeen she married James Caward. They came to America in 1842 and settled near Geneva, N. Y., where they engaged in farming and through her good care and management, as well as by her husband’s industry, they accumulated a small fortune; their five younger sons were born while living at this place. In 1845 they decided to go west to secure land of their own and moved at once, settling in Wauksha Co., Wis. Not finding the land and surroundings as they expected and spending some time in unsatisfactory search for a location, they were about to return to N. Y., when her husband, rather against her wishes, took a contract to work for a R. R. Co. By having a contract made through a third party, he was defrauded of his pay. Worried and discouraged over his loss, her husband was taken sick and died Jan. 9th, 1859, in Whitewater, Wis.

Her daughter then a babe, also her oldest son were seriously sick. A large force of men who had been in his employ were anxiously waiting their pay and, although knowing it would take all her property to pay them, she at once disposed of it and settled all claims. Soon after this her father died, leaving her £100, with which she purchased a home where she resided until she came to Cresco. Soon after their marriage husband and wife united with the Methodist Church and until failing health prevented was an active worker in that society.
