Iowa Plain Dealer June 3, 1886, P3 C3

Sorrowful and Fatal Accident.

On Monday morning last, Grant Barker, son of E. I. Barker, was in the hay press works, when the large wooden pulley wheel exploded from its velocity, throwing a large section of the wheel, hitting Grant Barker, who was standing some fifteen feet away, a terrible blow in the breast, knocking him away ten or fifteen feet. He was put upon an ambulance and taken home, dying from his injuries a few hours thereafter. He was a little over nineteen years of age.

The force with which the wheel exploded may be judged of from the fact that a piece of it went through the roof of the barn and fell upon the platform of the scales in front of the store of Ernest & Flood.
