Ida Heath Bowers

Mrs. W.E. Bowers passed away at her home in Cresco Sunday morning at the age of 73, after a lingering illness. Her maiden name was Ida Heath, daughter of C.B. Heath who was a direct descendent of Sir Isaac and Lord Thomas Heath, of London, England. She was also a second cousin of Thomas A. Edison.

She was born in Pennsylvania Mar. 7, 1855, and came to Iowa with her parents in 1859 and settled near Decorah in Winneshiek county. She was married at New Oregon to Walter E. Bowers of Howard county January 1, 1877, by Thomas Ives, J.P. To them were born seven children, one having died in infancy, Edward C., now deceased; Joseph C., of Marengo, Iowa; Mattie May, now Mrs. E.E. Scofiled of Pittsburg, Kansas; George Gordon of Cresco; Glen G. of Lanesboro, Minn., and James Lee of McGregor, Iowa, all of whom came to attend the funeral of their mother. Her daughter, Mrs. Scofield has been with her constantly for the last seven weeks, and Mr. Scofield has been here for the past ten days.

Mrs. Bowers has lived in Cresco for more than half a century and is known as an earnest christian woman and consistent member of the Methodist church, having united with the Methodist church at Freeport, Winneshiek county, early in life. She was a good mother, a kind neighbor and a true friend to all in time of need.

She is survived by her husband, five children, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 6, at the Methodist church conducted by Rev. F.H. Weed, with interment in Oaklawn cemetery.
