Donald O. Dahly, age 90, passed away in Mason City, Iowa surrounded by his family on Sunday, June 15, 2014. Donald was born in York, Minnesota on June 6, 1924, the only child to Laura (March) and Ole Dahly. Donald was baptized at Saetersdal Lutheran Church near their family farm northeast of Lime Springs, Iowa. He was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs. His family purchased a farm south of LeRoy, Minnesota and that is where his father passed away suddenly in 1940. Donald continued to farm and support his mother. He met and married Lois Heins in 1947. To this union were born a daughter, Lavonne, and a son, Joe (Jerry). They later divorced. In 1979 he married Irma Hobson at Messiah Lutheran Church in Charles City, Iowa. Donald farmed until he retired. He was also a trucker and mechanic. He enjoyed working on cars, trucks, motorcycles, tractors, and anything with a motor. He worked at the Oliver Plant in Charles City and Lenz Implement in Riceville. He drove school bus for Riceville Schools. He was a trustee in his church for many years. He enjoyed rebuilding cars and was a great repairman. Donald had many hobbies. He enjoyed working on and watching stock car races, NASCAR, tractor pulls, steam engine shows, and motorcycle hill climbs, to name a few. Family and friends will miss his life lessons, his humor, his hobbies, his collections, conversations about cars, roadtrips, his stories, and going to coffee with him. His Norwegian friends will miss going to lutefisk church dinners with him. They will also miss his ever encouraging favorite phrase "hang in there". Donald is survived by his wife Irma, Riceville; daughter, Lavonne (Edward) Byrnes, Osage; son, Joe (Jerry) Dahly, Riceville; grandsons: Joshua (Colleen) Byrnes, Osage, Jonathan (Dani) Byrnes, Osage, Cameron (Rachel) Byrnes, Clear Lake, Collin Byrnes, Rochester, MN; great-grandchildren: Alexandra, Braden, Nolan, Liam, Scarlett, and Oliver Byrnes; 4 step children: Cathy Christensen, Boone. Ellis (Pam) Hobson, Riceville, Bruce Hobson, Protovin, Patty Kelner and Dale, Austin, MN; 15 step grandchildren and 26 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, step father Lawrence Roe, and a step son-in-law, Gary Christensen.
Visitation:
5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville and one hour before services at the church.Service:
11:00 am on Friday, June 20, 2014 at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 705 3rd Ave, Charles City, Iowa with Rev. Jane Keel and Rev. Linda Prestholt officiating.Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs, Iowa.
