Emil Panos

Emil Panos, 76, of Protivin, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at his home of natural causes.

A memorial mass will be held Friday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Center in Protivin, with the Rev. Allen Schmitt celebrating the mass.

Music for the service will be provided by Marlene Pecinovsky, as organist, and the Holy Trinity choir. Lector will be Eugene Kovarik. Eucharistic minister will be Ruth Praska.

Mass servers will be Kyle Panos and Nathan Mracek. The gifts will be presented by Emil's grandchildren.

Interment will be at the St. Mary's Cemetery in Little Turkey. Honorary bearers will be Emil's five sons-in-laws, Joe Schwickerath, Ron Hackman, Marshall Meier, Kevin Alexander and Connie Langreck.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 6, from 3-8 p.m., at Hugeback's Protivin Funeral Home, with a 4 p.m. rosary and 4:30 p.m. parish scripture service. Further visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Emil was born near Little Turkey March 9, 1923, the son of Albert J. and Mary (Riha) Panos. He attended Utica No. 6 rural school.

On Aug. 28, 1945, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, he was married to Adelyne Klimesh. Following marriage, the couple lived and farmed near Little Turkey on the farm where Emil was raised.

Emil started doing carpentry work in 1956 while they were on the farm. In 1963 Emil started Panos Construction. He continued farming until 1966 and moved to Protivin in 1967, retiring when he was 64.

His hobbies included playing cards, fishing, video games and traveling. Emil also enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Adelyne; 3 sons, Gary (Sue) Panos, Jim (Sharon) Panos, and Ken (Mary Jo) Panos, all of Protivin; 5 daughters, Norma (Ron) Hackman of Waucoma, Margaret Bell of Council Bluffs, Arlene (Marshall) Meier of Brookfield, Wis., Marion (Kevin) Alexander of Waterloo, and Rose Ann (Joe) Schwickerath of New Hampton; a son-in-law, Connie Langreck of West Union; 27 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Emil Panos was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Geraldine Langreck in 1999; 3 sisters, Mildred Gebel, Celia Schwamman and Clara Franzen; and 2 brothers, Adolph and Leonard Panos.
